There’s not much that’s as frustrating in the world of auto body collision repair than a cracked windshield. It’s unsightly, can be annoying depending on where it is, and has the potential to be dangerous. If left unattended, a crack can grow, leading to a weakened windshield at risk of shattering completely. However, how you approach resolving it can depend on the nature of the damage. If you’re unsure whether you can get away with a windshield repair or should invest in replacing the whole thing entirely, here are some tips to help you decide.

Repair

Cracks shorter than a dollar bill and chips smaller than a quarter can almost always be easily fixed, and if the damage isn’t so deep that it goes through both the outer and inner layer of glass, you should have no trouble. Longer cracks or larger chips can also be mended, but this will depend on the technology your auto body collision repair shop has available. Where the damage occurs matters, too, as repairs must not impair the driver’s vision nor affect any sensors such as lane departure warning systems, automatic braking systems, and rain sensors.

Replace

There are some red flags to indicate your windshield is beyond repair. You’ll need to replace it if the crack has a depth of at least half of your windshield thickness or if the break is longer than a dollar bill or extends to the outside edge of the windshield. In all these instances, the damage is too extensive to safely repair. The type of glass is also vital as to whether your window can be salvaged. Tempered glass—the glass that side and back windows are made from—cannot be repaired; only laminated glass is safe to do so. If you’ve been in a crash and need to put your car into an auto body collision repair shop, the team working on your vehicle will be able to advise on the best course of action.
