Transmission problems will only get worse over time. Recognizing red flags early on allows you to address them before a failure causes more damage throughout the engine or leads to a breakdown. Know the early signs of trouble so you can visit the body shop for service.

Body Shop Guide to Transmission Trouble Warning Signs

1. Slipping

Slipping occurs when your vehicle moves between gears for no apparent reason. The car may suddenly seem like it’s not getting the amount of power that it’s supposed to, so it will have difficulty accelerating or maintaining your current speed.

2. Burnt Odor

Transmission fluid is responsible for lubricating the system’s moving parts and keeping it cool. If your transmission is overheating, you may smell the fluid itself burning with an odor similar to hot rubber. It may also occur if the fluid is too dirty or if you have a leak that’s dripping onto hot engine parts. Your body shop will diagnose the cause.

3. Leaking Fluid

Check under your vehicle for pools of this fluid on the ground; it will likely puddle under the center or front of your vehicle. You may also smell a sweet odor coming in through your vents.

4. Delayed Acceleration

This issue is also commonly referred to as delayed engagement. When you shift the vehicle into drive, it should move forward immediately as you apply the gas. Delayed engagement means there’s a long pause before the car starts to move forward—a troubling sign for your transmission.
