When your child is struggling in school, it can impact everything from their self-esteem to how they feel about formal education. It isn’t always easy to tell if a child is struggling in math until report cards have come out, which is why it’s important to know the signs that they’re having difficulty. Here are three signs to tell that your child is struggling with math, and when to turn to a math tutor for help.

How to Know If Your Child Is Struggling With Math

1. Poor Grades

While a poor report card is a dead giveaway, you should pay attention to your child’s grades long before the end of the term. Talk with your child’s teacher about how to access grades online and check them weekly to make sure that your child is on track. If you start to notice a decline in your child’s scores, talk with your son or daughter about why they are struggling. If they are falling behind and receiving low scores, consider working with a math tutor early on to help them target the issue and catch up.

2. Personal Frustration

If your child seems angry about school or talks about hating math, taking them to a math-positive place to work with a math tutor can help them have a fresh appreciation for the subject.

3. Physical Signs of Rudimentary Understanding

Pay attention to your child as they do math homework. Watch out for the signs that they are using old concepts to tackle new information, such as counting on fingers, drawing pictures of dots on paper, or using a calculator for things they should be able to calculate in their heads. If your child is struggling or slow with basic concepts, it will be difficult to learn more advanced topics. Since math builds upon itself, schedule an appointment with a math tutor to iron out any kinks with lower-level math skills.
