The loss of a loved one can be overwhelming, but even in grief, it's important to honor their life. If they requested cremation, then one of the biggest challenges will be choosing the right urn. Facing that decision during such a trying time can be difficult, but here are a few ways to select an option that will honor your loved one.

3 Ways to Choose the Right Cremation Urn

1. Determine the Size Needed

Urns are typically sized using the height and weight of the deceased, but not all styles are available in multiple sizes. Adult is the standard size used for individuals up to 220 pounds and under six feet tall, depending on the specific design. For someone over those dimensions, an extra-large option is recommended. There are also smaller keepsake urns available for dividing ashes up among multiple individuals.

2. Evaluate the Placement

cremationThe intended location of the urn also needs to be considered because of the restraints of certain materials. When burial occurs after the cremation, most options work, including ceramic, wood, stone, and metal. There are also biodegradable variations. If you’ll be placing it outside, coated metal is ideal. For inside, you can utilize more delicate materials, like glass.

3. Consider Personalizing It

As with a headstone, many families choose to personalize an urn with text or artwork. If you opt to do so, you will have the choice between a direct and indirect engraving. With the latter, a plate or draped pendant will be engraved first and then attached to the urn separately.

For a direct engraving, the urn needs enough surface area for the desired design. The material should also work for the chosen inscription process. For instance, laser engravings work well on coated metals and wood; they’re not suitable for ceramic urns. Sandcarving, on the other hand, is ideal for stone urns, like marble and granite.
