From picking out the invitations, flowers, and dresses to choosing the food to go on the menu for the reception, there are a lot of decisions to be made. Of all the selections, choosing the food is one of the most enjoyable because of the wedding tasting. Rather than poring over catalogs of color patterns and ideas, you get to sit down and sample the food your wedding caterer offers. More than just a fun meal, the wedding tasting helps you make an informed decision about which dishes and desserts will appear on the final menu.

Do:

Establish a budget before you go.

Plan how much you want to spend to help narrow down your selection. For example, if you know you want a specific entrée that’s more expensive, you can tailor the rest of the menu to accommodate it.

Ask about the extras.

Your wedding caterer can help with more than just the food being served. They’ll have connections to other food-related vendors you will need for your big day. Consider beverage services and cake designers. If they don’t offer these services themselves, they may have recommendations for vendors who do.

Bring guests.

Wedding CatererWhile this event is generally meant for the bride and groom, bringing along extra people makes the decision process easier. Find out from your wedding caterer how many people you’re allowed to bring along and consider inviting your wedding planner, maid of honor or best man, or your parents.

Don’t:

Forget about guests with dietary restrictions.

As you sample foods and start making your selection, keep those with dietary restrictions in mind. Consider those with allergies and food sensitivities and kids who may be picky eaters. You should make sure you have at least one vegetarian or vegan-friendly dish on the menu.

Hesitate to ask for small changes.

If you love a particular entrée or side dish, but you don’t like one particular aspect of it (such as a sauce or vegetable) talk to the caterer about making a small change. These are perfectly acceptable to ask for, and since you’ll be paying for it, it’s important that everything is exactly the way you want it.

Eat too much before you arrive.

The word “tasting” may imply to some that it’s just a small bite. That’s not the case here. You’ll get to sample a wide variety of dishes, and there is no set portion size standard. Basically, come with an appetite.
