The end of summer is fast approaching, and it won’t be long before your AC shuts down for the cold weather. Before your cooling unit takes its final bow for the season, have an air conditioning contractor inspect it thoroughly for any last-minute troubles. It’s better to address them now before they worsen and cost more to fix.

What Are the Common End of Summer AC Issues?

1. Weak Airflow

Pay attention to your unit’s airflow—did it appear to be weaker than usual? If it does, it can be due to clogged filters and misaligned fans. Heavy usage in summer causes filters to get dirty and filled with debris, which prevents the conditioned air from circulating properly. Listen for rattling sounds inside that point to a fan out of line—not only is it causing the poor airflow but the racket as well.

2. Leaking Refrigerant

If your AC appears to have difficulties in maintaining the right temperature, have an air conditioning contractor check the refrigerant levels. A dip in levels suggests that there’s a leak somewhere in the system, causing your unit to blow out warm air instead of cold. It damages the compressor and results in evaporator coils freezing over time.

3. Frozen Coils

air conditioning contractorApart from refrigerant leaks, there are other reasons why evaporator coils inadvertently freeze. Clogged filters, dirty coils, duct leaks, faulty blower fan, and blocked registers can cause them to become frozen—condensation formed on the surface of the coils start icing up instead of dripping down or dying out. Before your AC conks out by the season's end, let an air conditioning contractor check it for issues.

4. Failing Motor

Many homes run their AC for extended periods in the summer, so it’s not surprising that some of its parts begin breaking down at the final stretch. Capacitors are among the first to fail, and without them, the compressor motor and fan will have difficulties starting up. When this goes on for too long, your motor can’t keep up with the excess strain and may fail by the end of the season.

5. Frequent Cycling

When your cooling unit cycles on and off more frequently than usual at this point, check the thermostat first. If there were no noticeable improvements on short cycling, have an air conditioning contractor check for bad relay switches, low refrigerant levels, and faulty, outdated thermostat.
