Most people don't think about the acidity of their paper, but artists, craftspeople (especially scrapbookers), and archivists know how important acid-free paper can be for the lifespan of their creative projects. At Hawaiian Graphics, our art experts can give you valuable guidance and advice when choosing the right paper for your next creative project, including finding acid-free or archival papers.

Acid-free refers to paper which, through the manufacturing process and buffering (adding alkaline reserve, like calcium carbonate), have neutralized and protected the paper from acids in the base materials. These acids are the agents that cause damage like discoloring, browning and deterioration. Archival papers are premium papers that are made with 100% cotton rag, a base material that is not acidic, does not contain lignins and is very durable with a greater longevity over less expensive acid-free papers. Both types of papers are much more resistant to environmental damage than more acidic paper stock (like newsprint), and won’t turn yellow or brittle with age when stored correctly. While acid-free or archival papers are more expensive than regular paper, they are worth the expense to protect and extend the life of your artwork.

In addition to selling acid-free and archival papers, Hawaiian Graphics also provides high quality art supplies to amateur and professional creative people. We are an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau, and a proud member of the National Arts Materials Trade Association.
