There are currently two diseases bats carry that are proven to be harmful to humans in Connecticut: rabies and histoplasmosis. However, there is also an unknown disease called white-nose syndrome (WNS). None of these are easily contracted but can be a problem if bats have taken shelter in your home. If you suspect bats are living in your attic, or another location on your property, you should contact a wildlife control specialist immediately, as the following diseases can be dangerous.

A Guide to Common Bat Diseases

1. Rabies

The rabies virus attacks the central nervous system. If untreated, it can cause disease in the brain and eventually, death. It is considered a fatal but preventable health issue, and it’s easily transmitted via bites and scratches from infected animals. It’s preventable as long as your follow wildlife control best practices to keep bats off your property and seek medical attention immediately if scratched or bitten.

2. Histoplasmosis

wildlife controlHistoplasmosis is a fungal disease spread by inhaling spores that are found in dried bat and bird droppings. It can lead to respiratory problems but is rarely fatal. Spores die in dry heat, so they are seldom found in attics; however, chicken roosts are a prime environment for them to grow. Avoid handling bat droppings. Instead, contact a wildlife control specialist to remove the bats.

3. White-Nose Syndrome

WNS was discovered in 2006, and since then, it has infected millions of bats over 33 states, including Connecticut. The name comes from a fungus found on the muzzle, and other parts of the body, of hibernating bats. There are currently no reports of WNS affecting humans, but since it is a new disease, experts recommend staying away from bats displaying this fungus, even if they are dead. The DEEP Wildlife Division Bat Program® is asking the public for photos or emails if bats displaying this disease are found.
