Asphalt driveways are popular for their durability and stain resistance. However, constant temperature changes, weight loads, and weather can all take their toll on your driveway. When it comes to oil stains, dirt, and grime, you can actually prevent more damage with some simple guidelines and handy household products.

3 Cleaning Tips for Asphalt Driveways

1. Clear Away Leaves

While you might assume that organic matter like leaves shouldn’t hurt your asphalt driveway, this isn’t actually true. As organic matter decays, it releases tannins, which can stain your driveway brown. While this may not show up on darker shades of asphalt, keeping your driveway free of rotting organic matter will also decrease concentrated spots of moisture, which can lead to ice buildup or cracking.

2. Use Household Cleaners to Remove Oil Stains

asphaltIf you do get oil stains on your asphalt driveway, don’t despair. You probably already have the chemicals you need to clean it. Powdered laundry detergent is particularly effective for lifting oil stains. Simply rub the powder into the asphalt, and let it sit a few minutes to allow the stain to lift. Next, scrub with a hard-bristled brush and rinse off with a hose. Baking soda can be used for a more natural solution. For hard-set or stubborn stains, scrubbing with household bleach will also work. Just be careful to not mix the bleach with any ammonia-based products. Remember to use hand and eye protection anytime you work with cleaning chemicals.

3. Powerwash the Surface Every Spring

Over the winter, your asphalt can become caked with road salt and mud, all of which can seep into the asphalt as the snow melts. A little bit of annual maintenance can go a long way, though. Give your driveway a good power washing every spring to thoroughly cleanse it of salt and dirt. If you don’t have access to a power washer, try a garden hose and a stiff-bristled push broom.
