Although cats can be fairly solitary and independent, they shouldn’t necessarily stay at home when pet owners are away for extended periods. Fortunately, kennels can provide a cozy home away from home that allows your feline to play, receive care, and enjoy companionship. But because cats can be fickle, make sure you select a reputable facility and prepare your pet for their stay. To help you avoid hiccups with the cat boarding process, here are a few do’s and don’ts to follow.

Do:

Take a tour.

If you’re new to a cat boarding facility, call ahead and arrange a tour. During your visit, check the space for cleanliness and comfort. Also, take the opportunity to ask the staff questions and observe how they treat their pet guests.

Request references.

Even if a kennel meets every item on your checklist, ask the staff for references. Contact a few to get a sense of their experience with the facility. Find out if they would recommend it for cat boarding.

Pack familiar belongings.

cat boardingPets, especially cats, can experience anxiety and stress when they’re in an unfamiliar environment—such as a kennel. By boarding them with some of their favorite belongings—bed, toys, and a sweater with your scent—your feline friend won’t feel so out of place in their temporary home.

Don’t:

Leave out important pet care instructions.

If your pet has special care needs, clearly write out instructions and provide them to the manager of the cat boarding facility. For example, explain how medications, if any, should be given, what foods your cat should eat, and how to contact you and your vet in case of an emergency.

Forget to vaccinate.

If your cat is due for any pet vaccinations—such as for rabies—get these shots from a trusted veterinarian before a kennel stay. Most cat boarding facilities require guests to be fully vaccinated to prevent pets in their care from catching communicable diseases.

Linger too long.

Although saying goodbye is always tough, try to keep calm and make a smooth exit when it’s time to drop off your cat. If you’re stressed or emotional, your pet may pick up on these cues and become anxious.
