Since your mower is one of the most essential pieces of lawn equipment, it can be frustrating if it suddenly won’t start. However, this problem isn’t impossible to resolve. While you might be able to troubleshoot the issue on your own, you may need to take the device to an equipment repair technician. Here are a few of the most common reasons this problem occurs.

Why Won’t the Lawn Mower Start?

1. Clogged Filter

The air filter is designed to block grass clippings, dirt, and other contaminants from entering the mower’s engine via the carburetor. The debris could otherwise cause premature wear on the system and reduce its efficiency. Cleaning it regularly is vital to avoid unexpected equipment repair services and protect the life of the device. To do so, remove the cover and wipe it down. If your mower has a foam filter, detach and clean it with mild dish detergent at least once every 25 hours of mower usage. Paper filters should be replaced.

2. Old Gas

The substance is highly volatile, and it can oxidize and develop a gummy consistency over the months. The gelatinous buildup causes clogs in the fuel lines. To fix this issue, you’ll need to siphon the fuel out of the mower and possibly clean the carburetor if it’s clogged. Then, use new gas and add stabilizer to prevent buildup during the season.

3. Plug Problems

The spark plug allows the engine to fire up the gasoline during combustion. As long as it’s clean and in good shape, it will do this job efficiently. Dirty, aging spark plugs, however, prohibit proper combustion in the engine’s cylinder. As a result, the mower may be difficult to start. Resolve the issue by disconnecting the spark plug. Wipe down the area to dislodge any buildup, and then use a socket to remove the actual plug. Then, push the replacement into the spark plug hole until it stops. Avoid tightening it too much; doing so could make it impossible to remove later and may require the help of an equipment repair technician.
