Many 17- and 18-year-olds can’t remember a time they didn’t know their high school friends, making the prospect of finding a new group at college daunting. This can be especially true if you are not planning to live on campus. However, classes provide plenty of opportunities for meeting new people. Find out the best ways to get to know your fellow students below.

How to Cultivate New Friendships in College

1. Discuss Assignments

One of the easiest ways to break the ice is to talk about the class assignments. After all, it’s something you know you have in common and can open up the opportunity to segue into different topics. Consider getting a conversation going by asking, “Did you do the reading?”

2. Pay Someone a Compliment

Many people respond well to compliments, and saying something nice can lead to an exchange about common interests. From a sports jersey to a lipstick color, there can be plenty to admire in your fellow classmates.

3. Find Common Ground

Often, community college students were born and raised in the area. You might, therefore, start talking to someone by asking which high school they attended. Perhaps your sports team played theirs or you had similar hangout spots.

Once you’ve begun talking to a fellow classmate on a regular basis, consider swapping contact information. This way you can exchange notes if one of you misses class or needs to ask questions about assignments.

5. Meet Outside of Class

Once a strong acquaintance has been established, consider setting up a time to meet outside of class. It could be as simple as grabbing a cup of coffee on campus or agreeing to meet at the gym.
