If you’re planning an extended trip out of town, keep your vehicle in long-term storage. You’ll have peace of mind knowing it’s safe in a guarded facility while you’re gone. If you’re putting a summer vehicle away for fall, this can also serve as the perfect solution to create more space in the garage. To ensure your ride remains in good condition, it’s important to perform a few tasks first.

What to Do Before Placing Your Vehicle in Long-Term Storage

1. Wash the Exterior

Before you put the vehicle in long-term storage, take it to a car wash. Otherwise, acids in bird droppings, chemicals from exposure to the elements, water, and additional grime can corrode the finish. Professionals can also apply a fresh coat of wax, which will serve as a barrier to prevent moisture and dust from settling on the paint underneath.

2. Fill the Gas Tank

This limits condensation, which can corrode the tank, deteriorate the fuel, and cause microorganisms to grow in the liquid. It’s wise to use a fuel stabilizer as well. It helps stop oxidation, which changes the viscosity and strength of the fuel.

3. Use a Cover

Put a cover on your vehicle before leaving the storage facility. Invest in a high-quality tarp for your vehicle’s make and model. The breathable fabric will keep moisture out and shield the surfaces from abrasive dirt and dust particles. If boxes or additional items fall on the car, the padding will protect the body and glass.

4. Change the Oil & Filter

Even if you won’t drive it for a while, still change the oil. When the liquid is contaminated with dirt, metal particles, and additional grime, it will turn into sludge that clogs components. Changing the filter will also prevent particles from settling and impacting engine performance later.
