Proper grooming is an essential part of animal care and helps keep your pet comfortable, content, and healthy. Puppies should see a groomer for the first time at the age of 10 to 12 weeks, but given the fact that this will be a new experience for them, the better prepared they are, the smoother the process will go. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your puppy's first trip to the groomer.

Tips for a Puppy's First Visit to the Groomer

1. Don't Show Up Early to Pick Them Up

Make plans to be away from the groomer for the duration of the puppy's appointment. Run errands, stop by your favorite animal care retailer and pick up a special toy or treat, or arrange to meet up with a friend for coffee—anything to occupy your time and reduce worries. Your puppy is in good hands; groomers are animal care professionals. While you may be eager to pick them up, arriving too early could agitate the animal and get them riled up before the grooming is complete.

2. Do Basic Grooming Procedures at Home

Brushing is a great place to start. Show them the brush, let them sniff it, and give them treats as a way of establishing good feelings with it. Then, gently place it against their fur, stroke them lightly a few times, and show them the brush again, letting them sniff some more and get more treats. Gradually increase the length and intensity of the strokes, pulling back on the frequency of the brush-sniffing and treats.

3. Follow the Groomer's Advice

When making your first appointment, the groomer may have some advice to make the experience easier on your pet. They may suggest bringing a toy that has comforting associations for the puppy, or they might inform you that they will call when the grooming is finished, so you don't show up too early. After the groom, they will likely have some suggestions for at-home care, such as brushing and combing to avoid matting. Always follow their advice to get the most out of the groomer's services and make your puppy look and feel their best.
