Fleas are tiny, wingless parasites that feed on blood. They’re not only itchy and uncomfortable for your cat but can also pose serious health problems, such as anemia and tapeworms. Fortunately, there are several preventative products, many of which contain flea medicines, to help minimize a cat’s risk of infestation.

A Guide to Flea Prevention Products

1. Topical Creams

Topical creams are applied to a cat's skin, and most will last about a month before needing to be reapplied. They utilize flea medicines that start killing off the insects quickly, sometimes in as few as 12 hours, and can help discourage new ones from seeking out your cat. Selamectin and spinetoram are two popular topical solutions for cats with fleas.

2. Shampoos

flea medicineShampoos designed specifically to combat fleas can help kill any insects on the cat's body and prevent them from returning. Many contain the topical flea medicines pyrethrin or permethrin. When choosing a shampoo, keep in mind that cat and dog flea shampoos can’t be used interchangeably.

3. Oral Medications

Oral flea medications typically come in flavored tablets or liquids, so they're easy for your cat to swallow. Most oral preventatives go to work right away, and they’re much cleaner than creams or solutions applied to the skin. Also, with topical options, there's always a risk of the cat licking off the medicine.

4. Collars

Flea collars work by gradually distributing flea-deterring chemicals over a cat's skin and fur. Eventually, the cat absorbs the chemicals and is better able to keep fleas away. Collars are best suited for flea prevention. For an infestation, more intensive treatments like medicines, creams, or shampoos are more effective.
