Apple iPhone 6s - What to Expect, Manhattan, New York

It has been announced that Apple will be holding a special event on Wednesday, Sept. 9th. The timing and speculation all indicate that this will be the event where Apple will announce the iPhone 6s line. There will undoubtedly be other announcements including the possibility of a new Apple TV, and maybe even an iPad Pro. We'll leave those goodies alone for now and just focus on the iPhone 6s.

As always, there is rampant speculation about what the new iPhone will have or not have in its feature set. While some rumors are downright comical, there is some hard evidence to establish at least a basic understanding of what the new iPhone 6s will be.

Let's take a look at what details are available at the moment from most likely to least likely.

ALMOST CERTAIN:

New Processor - Apple will supposedly be announcing the new A9 chip built into the iPhone 6s. The chip is apparently a significant upgrade to the A8 currently in use and will allow for much faster image processing with the camera as well as allow for smooth multitasking, available in iOS9.

Force Touch - The new technology that has been incorporated into the Apple Watch and the most recent Macbook will almost certainly make its way onto the iPhone 6s. While stories have speculated that the technology will be renamed something other than "force touch", the functionality will be there allowing users to add a pressure sensitive, secondary "click" to access additional options. The force touch feature will most likely be customizable, allowing for users to assign specific functions to it.

Better Camera - Considering how critical the camera is to the success of the iPhone, Apple has increased camera capabilities in almost every iPhone incarnation from the beginning. The iPhone 6s should be no exception. We are expecting a 12MP camera which along with the better processor should allow for crisper, clearer images. The most significant speculation around the new camera is the possibility of 4K video capability. This would make the iPhone one of the first phones to provide 4K video capture. Rumors have also indicated that the front-facing camera will have higher resolution and may also include a flash.

New Colors - Manufacturing images have also indicated that a new Rose Gold color may be added to the iPhone lineup.

UNLIKELY:

New Glass - Early rumors indicated that the iPhone 6s would now utilize a sapphire glass which would be nearly scratch proof. While this is a possibility for the iPhone 7, all indications are that it will not be utilized in the iPhone 6s.

Smaller Model - Some early rumors also indicated a smaller form factor would be available as an option for the iPhone 6s. The smaller version would have been closer in size to the iPhone 5 and would have been a less expensive model similar to the 5c line. Indications are that there is no smaller model in production at this time.

USB-C - While Apple seems to be moving towards USB-C as a standard for connectivity, there has been no indication that the iPhone 6s will use USB-C for charging. All expectations are that the 6s will utilize the same Lightning connector for charging.

HIGHLY UNLIKELY:

Curved Glass - There had been speculation that the iPhone 6s would incorporate a curved glass edge design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Edge series. There is no evidence, nor has there ever been any evidence of a curved glass design.

Conductive Charging - Another early rumor is that the iPhone 6s would have conductive charging capabilities similar to that of the Apple Watch. While a possibility for the iPhone 7, there has not been any evidence that the iPhone 6s will incorporate anything other than traditional, cable-based charging.
