If you’re missing a tooth or multiple teeth, a dentist might recommend a dental implant, or other option, to improve your smile and ability to chew confidently. Dentures, bridges, and implants are the three most common tooth replacement options, each having their own strengths and weaknesses. If you need a replacement, here’s what you need to know.

Options for Replacing Missing or Extracted Teeth

1. Dentures

Dentures are the most well-known of the three tooth replacement types. Dentures are fitted around your teeth or gums and are held in place with temporary cement. Partial dentures cover a portion of the mouth, while full dentures cover the entire upper or lower jawline. Both will need to be removed regularly and cleaned overnight but will provide a strong, comfortable bite for patients.

2. Bridges

implantsDental bridges are used to bridge the gap between teeth where one or two are missing. They are often used when there’s not enough bone in the jaw to allow for an implant. A false tooth is made with one or two caps to anchor it to the teeth surrounding the empty gum area. These caps are cemented into place, often permanently. This is a good option for teeth that need a filling or cover, as the bridge will also act as a crown for decayed or damaged neighboring teeth.

3. Implants

Implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth, and they feel and look natural—like real teeth. A titanium anchor is placed into the jaw bone and left to bond with the mouth for about six months, after which a false tooth is screwed into it. They are an ideal option for an area with only one missing tooth. Plus, they don’t require the dentist to alter neighboring teeth to set them.
