It wouldn’t be a complete beach vacation without some ocean exploration. If snorkeling is new to you and the kids, prepare them in advance with these tips to have a fun, safe experience.

3 Snorkeling Tips for Children

1. Make Sure Everything Fits

The first time you and the family go snorkeling should not be the first time the kids put on their gear. Before the trip, take some time to make sure you have the right gear and that everything fits properly. Fins that won’t stay on or a mask that is too big to form a seal around your child’s face can put a last-minute damper on the fun.

2. Practice

SnorkelingThe kids can practice putting on their gear and using it at home. Fill the bathtub with water and use it as a controlled area where they can get a feel for the gear, practice breathing through the tube, and check that nothing leaks. The local pool is another more spacious place to try out their equipment and practice swimming if needed.

3. Come Prepared

Even if you plan on using the gear provided by the tour operator, it’s a good idea to bring an extra set just in case the ones provided don’t fit your kids. Depending on your children’s swimming abilities, you may also want to bring life vests or floaties.
