When you have to take a charter bus overnight, you shouldn’t expect to stay awake the whole time. You have to figure out how you’ll get decent sleep during your trip. While nothing beats a comfortable bed in a clean, quiet environment, there are a few tips to follow so that you feel rested when you reach your destination.

How to Sleep Well on Overnight Charter Bus Trips

1. Avoid the Crowds

If you leave early in the morning or late at night, there’s a solid chance that the bus will be empty enough that you could claim a whole row for yourself. That way, you can stretch out and get comfortable when you feel the need to sleep. Also, since traffic will be less hectic, you may reach your destination quickly.

2. Plan to Sleep Upright

The charter bus could be full no matter when you leave. In this case, prepare to sleep upright. If possible, get a window seat so that you can lead your head against the glass. Either way, support your head with a soft neck pillow while you relax your muscles. 

3. Pack for Comfort

Since you can’t control the temperature on a charter bus, dress in something light to stay cool, but bring a sweater or another long-sleeved shirt and an extra blanket or two as well, just in case. To help you tune out the rest of the world, also pack an eye mask and earplugs or headphones.

4. Prepare in Advance

Sleeping deeply on a charter bus is hard enough, especially if you have to do it upright, so don’t make it harder on yourself than necessary. Eliminate distractions and turn off electronics an hour or so before you want to rest. Give your mind and body time to wind down first, and don’t let anything interrupt you once you’re asleep.

5. Recline, Don’t Lean

It’s harmful to your spine to sit upright for hours on end, so if you don’t get a row to yourself, you should recline back a little in your seat or lean with your head against a window or your arm. However, don’t lean forward for long periods, as that can be even worse for your back than sitting upright.
