How Does the Summer Heat Affect Your Car Tires?, Lexington-Fayette Northeast, Kentucky

Just like the cold winter temperatures can affect your car’s tires, so can the hot summer months. Summer temperatures seem to be on the rise year after year, so it’s essential to understand when the tire pressure fluctuates. Here’s how the summer heat plays a pivotal role in your tires and what auto parts you need to keep them maintained.

3 Ways the Summer Heat Affects Tires

1. Higher Air Pressure

When the air is colder outside, the molecules in your tires slow down, resulting in a lower tire pressure; when the temperature warms up, those same molecules speed up and increase the pressure. While most cars are equipped with sensors to warn you when a tire’s pressure is too low, there is no automatic gauge that alerts you when it’s too high. The hotter it is outside, the more likely you are to have overinflated tires that could result in a blowout while driving. You can prevent this by using a tire pressure gauge from an auto parts store to test your tires weekly and make sure they’re filled with the right amount of air.

2. Increased Wear

Auto partsAs the sun heats the pavement in the summer, it can have an impact on your tires. If you’re not careful and driving around on underinflated wheels, the hot road could cause a separation between the outer tread and inner carcass of your tires, increasing your risk of a blowout.

3. Less Integrity

The hot summer days can have a significant impact on the natural oils that are in the rubber of tires. Direct sunlight and constant motion on hot roads can drive out the oils that keep your tires flexible and supple. As a tire starts to lose its oils, it can become brittle and break easily. This is one of the reasons you’ll find a tire date code stamped somewhere on the side; most tires should be replaced every six years or after 50,000 miles.
