As the weather gets colder, you’ll notice that your lawn will begin to develop dry and yellow patches. Throughout the winter, your grass may die entirely, diminishing the curb appeal of your property. Fortunately, fescue sod continues to grow beautifully full and green throughout the cold months. If you want to maintain a lush exterior year-round, here are the types of fescue sod you should consider planting in your yard.

4 Types of Fescue Sod

1. Hard

Hard fescue grass is one of the hardiest varieties, and it grows exceptionally well on lawns that are under-fertilized, shade-intolerant, and sit at a higher elevation. It requires minimal mowing and upkeep and features a blueish-green color that will make your home’s exterior look more attractive.

2. Tall

Tall fescue sod has a more delicate texture than hard varieties but is still quite resilient to foot traffic. This makes it ideal for everything from front and backyards to athletic fields and commercial properties. It is shade tolerant and continues to grow well as the seasons' transition from cool to warm.

3. Creeping

As far as upkeep is concerned, creeping fescue requires very little fertilization and irrigation. However, it does grow long and quickly, so regular mowing is recommended.

4. Chewing

Chewing fescue bears a resemblance to tall varieties but has much more delicate leaves. It adapts well to soils that are mainly sandy, acidic, or infertile, making it ideal for climates where regular grass has trouble growing. Chewing fescue sod bunches up, resists drought, and blends in with many different types of grass so that it can be easily integrated into an existing yard.
