If you’re looking to redesign your space, you’re probably looking forward to changing the colors of your walls. However, before you call house painters to take care of the job, you’ll need to know what color each room will be. This is always difficult, no matter the room, but kids’ rooms have a unique challenge: You want to strike the right balance between allowing your child to express themselves while also ensuring the color is appropriate and easily changed as they grow up. Here are some tips that’ll help that process go smoothly.

How to Choose the Right Color for Your Child’s Bedroom

1. Include Them in the Decision

While you may have a strong opinion about the color you want, a child who’s old enough to take part in the conversation should have a say. Allow them to suggest some of the colors they like, and then you can offer specific color shades for them to choose from. But don’t overwhelm your child with stacks and stacks of paint chips to consider—have three or four specific shades for them to look at. This way, your child will feel like a valuable part of the process, and they’ll end up with a color they like.

2. Go for Muted Shades

But when that happens and it’s time to paint again, a magenta or electric-blue wall is going to be far more difficult for your house painters to cover. When your child gives their initial color choices, present them with more subdued shades of those choices. For example, if they want green walls, show them colors like mint or seafoam, not lime or forest green. If they prefer purple, show them lavender or mauve, not a royal purple or wine color.

3. Look for Inspiration

If you and your child are having a hard time finding the right color, look to their interests and hobbies for inspiration. Do they like climbing trees and playing outside? Go for light greens, tans, and sunny yellows that’ll mimic the colors of nature. Do they like going to the beach? Opt for soft blues and beige. Are there animated characters they like? Base your color choices off of these characters, but be sure to go for more muted tones.
