For most people, a cancer diagnosis is a scary and life-changing event. They are suddenly faced with a barrage of complex and highly emotional issues, from visiting the doctor with increasing regularity to deciding on the best courses of treatment. Fortunately, there are some ways you can help a loved one with cancer and better support them on their journey.

How to Support a Loved One With Cancer

1. Listen

Often, an individual with cancer needs to vent about the frustrations of their condition, their treatment, and the pain and unfairness of the entire experience. One of the best ways to show up for someone in this situation is to simply listen. Though you will be tempted to try to "fix" things for them and assure them that everything will be OK, focus instead on just actively listening. Don't interrupt them, sit patiently and quietly, and look them in the eyes as they talk. When you respond, validate their feelings and acknowledge how hard this must be for them and how much you love them.

2. Offer Help With Daily Tasks

cancerWhen cancer has a person feeling low, they're not going to have the energy or interest to stay on top of daily tasks. Instead of waiting for them to ask for help, which many people find impossible to do even under the best of circumstances, offer your assistance with specific responsibilities. Stop by with groceries or a casserole you've made for them. Tell them you're going to come over this weekend and do some housework. Volunteer to walk the dog every afternoon.

3. Be Careful With Your Advice

No matter how well-intentioned it might be, advice can sometimes be unwelcome. Cancer is a vast and complicated subject, and doing your own homework and research is important to understanding the disease and its effects. However, don't give out unasked-for advice about treatments or how the patient "should" be coping or healing. Everyone handles the situation in their own way. Some people may want advice at every step. Others may want to listen only to their doctor. Respect that your loved one is in charge, and they get to have the final say in the matter of their own prescription.
