For a casual observer, the game of darts seems pretty easy to master. In reality, though, there are a lot of factors that impact how well you play. Getting a handle of basic principles like grip, stance, and throwing technique can help you become a force to be reckoned with. Here’s a closer look at upping your game.

Aim for a Firm, Relaxed Grip

When it comes to grip, many players get it all wrong. Squeezing the life out of the dart practically guarantees you’ll land off-target. Instead, focus on maintaining a firm yet relaxed grip when you're gearing up to throw. Try gripping it as you would a pencil, meaning the bottom of the barrel is comfortably resting on your thumb, while your index and middle fingers are resting on the top. Some players prefer to use three fingers, which can be helpful when throwing a dart that has a larger barrel.

Know the Stance Basics

dartsWhile there are almost as many stance styles as there are enthusiasts, you should be aware of the fundamentals. It’s best to lead with the same foot as your dominant throwing hand. For instance, if you’re right-handed, your right foot should be placed in front of you and your weight should be settled on this foot. Additionally, be wary of body movement when throwing. The more you move around, the less accurate your throw will be, so concentrate on keeping your feet and knees stable.

Create a Seamless Throwing Style

When setting up your throw, your arm should be parallel to the floor with your throwing hand resting at about face level. If movement is coming from your arm or shoulder, you’ll have less control over the dart, so generate motion from your hand and wrist alone. Don’t feel the need to use a lot of force upon your release—just enough that it reaches its intended location.
