Columns have been an architectural feature for centuries, initially serving the functional purpose of supporting ceilings without walls. Today, columns are used less for function and more for their ornamental design and grand nature. The columns you select for your home or business should be sturdy and well-constructed, but they should also fit the aesthetic you’re looking for. Learn more about the ornamental design of historic columns to better determine the style that’s right for you.

Column Styles Throughout History

Greek Columns

ornamental designDoric columns were the first style invented in ancient Greece, and they’re also the simplest of the Greek columns aesthetically. These columns have ridges running up and down, but lack other ornamental design, making them clean and regal. These columns stand outside of the Lincoln Memorial, creating a grand entrance but not taking away from the statue inside.

Columns with the Ionic style are more ornate than the Doric since they have a scroll-shaped ornament on top. These columns are also more slender, giving an entrance a leaner look. The Jefferson Memorial famously uses this column style.

Corinthian style columns are the most ornate Greek columns, iconically featured outside of the New York Stock Exchange. These have the grooves of the Doric style and an ornament on top like the Ionic style. However, instead of a scroll, the Corinthian style ornament features flowers and leaves.

Other Ancient Columns

Many think that only Greek columns are notable, but there have been many unique styles throughout history that originated in other countries and have impacted architecture. The Solomonic column, which is believed to have originated in ancient Jerusalem, features a twisting shaft. This whimsical look is very different from the perfectly straight Greek design. Ancient Egyptian columns were shaped like plain pillars, with no ridges or ornamental design, but they displayed intricate carvings. Persian columns were designed during the fifth century BCE, featuring columns with intricate carvings of horses and bulls on top.
