Breast cancer is the most common oncological disease among women. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, giving you an opportunity to support patients, survivors, and their families, while also spreading the word about this illness. Find out what you can do to make a meaningful difference this October.

October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

1. Help Out a Patient

If you know a person who has cancer, provide practical support. Someone going through chemotherapy or recovering from surgery will have decreased energy. You can drop off homemade meals, walk their dog, or take care of yard work. These everyday tasks make a big difference.

2. Participate in a Walk

3. Donate to Science

Research on how to best treat breast cancer is ongoing. Donate money to a charity that supports these endeavors and paves the way for improved care for future patients. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is one option.

4. Support Local Businesses

Many businesses run deals to support breast cancer charities during October. Scope out initiatives in your area. For instance, Panera Bread sells a pink ribbon bagel with “100 Percent Donation Days” during which profits go to a breast cancer awareness organization.

5. Schedule a Screening

Women from age 50 to 74 should get a mammogram every two years if they have average risk. Those with a family history of cancer, for instance, should be screened sooner. Schedule a screening for yourself if you fall into these brackets—or remind friends and family to get theirs.
