Radiators play a crucial role in preventing your vehicle’s engine from overheating. Keep up with routine maintenance to avoid being stranded on the side of the road with smoke coming out from under the hood. This includes knowing when it’s time to purchase new car parts, like a replacement radiator. Here are a few red flags that indicate your vehicle needs a new one.

3 Signs of a Failing Radiator

1. Low Coolant

car partIt’s normal to need to top off the coolant reservoir occasionally; however, you may have a faulty radiator if you’re doing it more than usual. When the radiator’s cap becomes damaged, it reduces pressure within the cooling system, causing the coolant to boil over.

2. Coolant Puddles

Coolant flows through the radiator to reach the engine. If you see green, yellow, or red liquid puddles under the vehicle, this may indicate a clogged radiator. Without any place to go, the coolant will leak through the housing or cooling fins and pool under the car. Unless you replace this car part immediately, you’ll lose all of the coolant, which will cause the engine to overheat.

3. Frequent Overheating

If the radiator is broken, it can’t properly control the temperature of the engine, causing overheating or high rises on the temperature gauge. You may need a new radiator if you’ve had to add coolant frequently due to constant smoke leaving the hood.
