The habits of toddlers are often different from those of adults. One of these can be eating non-foods like dirt. If your little one does this, you’re not alone— it's common for toddlers to be indiscriminate about what they eat. While you may be able to stay on top of this at home, you might be anxious about them repeating this behavior at a child care center. To give you peace of mind, here’s more information about why toddlers sometimes do this and what you can do about it.

Why Do Kids Eat Non-Food Items?

Kids are curious, and it takes them a while to develop that instinct that tells them that they shouldn’t eat something. For example, if a substance looks like chocolate, they expect it to taste the same way. This behavior is developmentally normal, and most of the time, children grow out of it. Whether at home or in a child care center, they learn what is and isn’t food, and odd habits become something you can chuckle about when they’re older.

However, some children deliberately eat non-food items because they have cravings for them. This eating disorder is called pica, and it can lead a child to consume harmful substances like dirt, coal, ash, paint, plaster, soap, and chalk. Pica often manifests due to nutritional deficiencies that cause cravings or developmental disorders like autism.

What Can You Do If Your Child Eats Dirt?

Child care centerWhile your child will likely grow out of it, this could still pose a problem– especially if you’re worried about them eating non-foods at their child care center. Talk to your doctor to discuss potential underlying causes for their behavior and make sure they are healthy and unharmed by their unusual eating habits.

Next, talk to staff at your child care center and explain the situation. They will support you by keeping the craved substances out the way and watching your toddler closely during play. At home, keep anything metallic or toxic away from your child, clean up pet messes immediately, and make sure they never play without supervision until they grow out of their habit.
