When a pipe bursts, it can create a challenge for homeowners. Whether the pipe burst in the kitchen or the basement, water will quickly accumulate and possibly damage nearby belongings. If your pipe bursts, below are crucial steps to take, including calling a plumber right away.

4 Steps to Take After a Pipe Bursts

1. Turn Off the Water Source

Before calling a plumber, find the shut-off valve for your water line. This will stop the water from continuing to flood into your home. The shut-off valve is usually found near your water heater or near the utility area on the outside wall of your home. Once you locate the water source switch, shut it off immediately.

2. Call a Plumber

Once you shut the water off, call a plumber. Tell them where the leak is located, the extent of the pipe’s damage, and what you think caused it. This way, they can bring the proper equipment with them, including a replacement pipe if necessary.

3. Drain the Faucets

plumbersThe plumber will advise you to drain all the faucets in your home to prevent water from leaking elsewhere. Turn all the faucets on—cold taps first—and allow them to drain completely before turning the hot taps next. Drain the toilets as well by flushing them two to three times each.

4. Remove the Water

While you wait for the plumber to arrive, mop the water to prevent anyone from slipping and sustaining an injury. If the pipe burst in the basement, diligently dry the residue with a rag or by placing fans near the spill. This is crucial, as any lingering moisture can encourage mold growth.
