When you sign up for a gym membership, you have access to an array of equipment, including a treadmill. While this machine effectively allows users to build stamina, it’s imperative to practice safety while running on the treadmill. If you’re a beginner and you want to try this equipment at the gym, below are a few tips to help get you started.

How to Safely Use the Treadmill at the Gym

1. Understand the Settings

Before you get started, take a look at the treadmill’s control panel. There should be options to control the speed of the machine, as well as its incline. There are likely also some preprogrammed workouts designed for heart health or burning fat. First, make sure you know how to stop the treadmill before you get on. Then, get on while it's stationary and slowly turn up the speed. When you're done, stop the treadmill before you get off.

2. Warm Up & Cool Down

gymWhenever you start a workout at the gym, start slow with a few minutes of walking. Not only will this help you adjust to the speed of the treadmill gradually, but it will also warm up your body, so you're less likely to sustain a muscle injury during your workout. When you're done, walk for a few minutes again to cool down before ending your workout.

3. Use Good Form

Avoid the urge to look down at your feet or at the control panel the whole time you're running, and instead, stand up straight and look ahead. This will help you avoid unnecessary strain on your neck and back, as well as maintain your balance so you're less likely to fall. Also, hang on to the handrails when you lose your balance to regain control.
