Watching a loved one struggle through the grieving process can be difficult. Of course, you want to do everything possible to ease their burden and help them through the funeral and beyond. However, there are certain steps you should avoid; although you may mean well, the actions listed below may not garner the results you’re looking for when supporting your friend.

What to Avoid When Helping a Grieving Friend

1. Forcing Them to Go Out

Planning a funeral can be time-consuming, and you may think getting your friend to take a break and go out will be just what they need. However, it’s important to respect their preferences during the grieving process. Going out may be too much so soon after a loss, and pushing them to do something they aren’t ready for can cause additional frustration and stress. Rather than pushing them to go out, gently ask if they think going somewhere would help clear their mind. If they don’t want to, respect their choice.

2. Pushing Them to Talk About It

funeralMost people are taught that during difficult periods, talking about their feelings is the only way to heal. As such, you may feel tempted to try and get your friend to discuss their feelings, even if they seem hesitant. However, in these circumstances, it’s better to let your loved one go through their emotions at their own pace and in their own way. Trying to get them to talk before they’re ready may have the opposite effect and cause them to shut down. Instead, let them know you’re there and ready to listen when they need you.

3. Making Assumptions About the Funeral

You might think your friend doesn’t want to answer questions about funeral planning or event information when they’re grieving. However, making assumptions about what they might need or want could end up contributing to their stress if you make a decision that they won’t be happy with. Instead, send them an email explaining that they should take their time answering, but you have a few questions you want to clear up in advance. Get all your questions together at once so they can address the situation one time.
