Your optometrist will review your medical history and overall health to determine whether you’re a candidate for the procedure. Those best suited are healthy adults who are not pregnant or nursing. If your prescription is still fluctuating, you’ll need to wait for it to stabilize before undergoing the procedure. 

What is the procedure? 

During LASIK surgery, the eye doctor will apply anesthetic drops to your eyes before lying you on the procedure table. Your eyelids will be held open with a retainer as the laser is positioned above your head. From here, a small flap is cut into the cornea so the doctor can remove damaged tissue. This procedure takes about 15 minutes in total, and you’ll feel no pain.

What is recovery like? 

After the procedure, the eye doctor will put ointment drops in your eyes to help them heal. You will need someone to take you home from the appointment because your vision will be blurry as it adjusts. On the day of the surgery, you should refrain from strenuous activity. You will most likely be able to return to work the following day. Side effects, such as dry eyes or halos around lights, are temporary and should go away within the month.
