Of all the bugs in the Midwest, one of the most dangerous to humans is the brown recluse spider. These spiders are found throughout the Ohio River Valley and as far south as Texas. If you think you have a brown recluse infestation, you should call an experienced exterminator that can rid your home of these venomous pests.

What Do They Look Like?

As far as size goes, brown recluse spiders are on the smaller side and usually don’t get bigger than a quarter with all of their legs extended. They come in shades from light tan to dark brown. You will find the only distinct marking on the dorsum in the shape of a violin. This arachnid has also been called the “fiddleback” spider. If you get close enough to one, you’ll notice that they only have six eyes compared to the usual eight you’d find on other spiders. They have skinny, silk-like legs with fine hairs.

Where Do They Hide?

As their name suggests, these exterminatorspiders prefer to live in secluded areas. These areas include anywhere in your home that you don’t clean regularly and are generally dark. If you have crawlspaces, dark corners in cabinets, or shaded appliances, a brown recluse may have taken residence. They’ve also been known to crawl into garden gloves and shoes that you don’t wear often. Another common area for them to hide is in woodpiles outside your home. If you have a fireplace and burns wood during the colder months, make sure the pile is stacked at least 20 feet away from your home and scrutinize each piece of wood before bringing it into your home. An exterminator will suggest moving the pile if it’s near an entrance to your home.

How to Prevent Them From Entering Your Home

Preventing these venomous spiders from getting indoors starts with examining the exterior of your home. If there are drainage pipes or holes in the side of your home, seal them up with caulk or foam. Not only will this discourage brown recluse spiders from getting in, but also other pests that you don’t want in your home.

If you suspect that you have a brown recluse infestation, call an exterminator to help you remedy the issue. They will have the right sprays and will make further suggestions on how you can keep them out of your home, so your family is protected.
