Fences have a variety of uses and come in a broad selection of styles and materials. Some are meant to keep people out, others keep people in, and some are installed for privacy. If you need a fence but haven't decided on the type, this guide can help you.

4 Common Reasons to Install a Fence

1. Pool Security

A pool fence should be sturdy enough to keep children out of the pool area while you’re unable to supervise. The gate should be able to lock. Nearly any fence higher than three or four feet would work. A chain-link fence, however, is particularly effective because it’s affordable, easy to install, and allows you to see through it so you can keep an eye on swimmers from inside the house or other parts of the yard.

2. Dog Restraint

A dog fence should be high enough to prevent your dog from leaping over it, but with narrow enough gaps to keep your furry friend from squeezing through. Chain link, again, is a good choice, but may not work for a dog that reacts strongly to visual stimulation. The large links mean the dog will have high visibility. In this case, consider vinyl or wooden slats instead and choose a type that doesn’t have a gap at the bottom.

3. Privacyfence

A privacy fence should be taller than about six feet with boards flush against each other to prevent prying eyes. Wooden or vinyl slats are ideal for this purpose. Chain link and wrought iron are not, since they do little to obstruct the view from outside.

4. Security

A security fence is best when it’s sturdy enough to withstand break-in attempts. It should also be tall enough to discourage scaling. Consider wrought iron, specifically with arrowhead-shaped bars along to top that make climbing the fence more difficult.
