Packing items like books and clothes is a fairly straightforward process. However, packing the kitchen, with its many fragile items and small appliances, can be much more complex. When preparing for a local move, making sure your knives and cutlery are properly packed is essential for preventing damage to other items or injury to you or your movers. Here are some key tips for safe knife packing.

How to Pack Knives & Cutlery

1. Use a Knife Block

moversIf you still have a knife block for your cutlery, this will be the safest and most convenient packing solution. Tape the knives into the block so that they don’t slip out when being transported by the movers, and then wrap the block in paper sheets and protective wrap. The knife block should either be packed in its own separate box or put at the bottom of a container with other kitchen utensils.

2. Wrap Safely

For knives that won’t be transported inside a block, you must take extra care during packing. Lay the knives on top of multiple layers of packing paper, with a 1-inch space kept between each one. Roll the paper, so each knife is wrapped in its own cocoon, and tape the rolls shut to keep them securely in place.

3. Prepare the Box

Sharp knives can easily poke through cardboard boxes if you aren’t careful. Reduce this risk by lining the inside of the box with crumpled paper. Use a smaller box when possible so that the knives will be tightly packed and less likely to slide around. Finally, label the box so that you and your movers know to exercise caution when transporting it.
