Preschool is an exciting milestone for both children and parents. It can also be a highly emotional time, so handle significant changes like this carefully. Below are a few guidelines for dropping off your child at preschool this year.

Do:

Be positive.

Children take their cues from you. If you are anxious or worried, they pick up on those emotions and feel them, too. The calmer you are about their new preschool class and the more excited you sound about how much they’ll enjoy it, the less likely it is that they’ll feel uneasy.

Make early visits.

Bring your child to the school before the first official day so that they get to see the building and check out the classroom. Call the child care center to schedule time with the teacher so that your child can meet them ahead of time. This helps reduce their fear of being with a stranger.

Stay consistent.

Create a routine for school days. Get up, eat breakfast, pick out clothing, and then grab their backpack before heading to the car. When at the facility, have a goodbye ritual that you do every day. It can be as simple as setting up their cubby before kissing them goodbye to creating a special hug, kiss, and handshake pattern only you two know.

preschoolDon’t:

Sneak out.

As tempting as it is to sneak away when your child is distracted, say an official goodbye and remind them you will be back soon. Give them a hug and kiss, and let them return the farewell. This minimizes anxiety and tantrums when they discover you’re gone.

Linger.

While it may be hard to leave while your child is distraught, lingering and showing that you are also upset only makes them feel worse. Stick to your routine and say a cheery goodbye before heading out. Your child will most likely be fine within minutes of your departure.

Forget to communicate with staff.

Ensure teachers are aware of any special signals or triggers your child may have. Tell the staff about your kid’s likes and dislikes so that they know how to comfort them. Let your child know that their teachers will help them and understand what makes them feel better.
