Moodiness and unpredictable behavior are common among teenagers. Changes in their bodies and the struggle to figure out who they are are a normal part of growing up. For some teens, though, those changes go well beyond the typical growing pains and are symptomatic of a more serious issue. Because teen depression is so common—appearing in nearly one in five teens—parents need to learn the signs of mental illness so they can get their kids help if necessary.

What to Pay Attention to in Your Teen

1. Mood Problems

Ongoing irritability, hostility, sadness, and hopelessness are often observed in those who are depressed. Pay close attention to how your teen interacts with others and watch for signs of unwarranted frustration, aggression, or excessive annoyance. Ask them about these outbursts to determine whether they have control over their emotions or are feeling overwhelmed.

2. Changes in Behavior

Depression-related behavioral changes can range from a loss of interest in activities to suddenly poor academic performance to an increase in risky or unusual behaviors like skipping school or using substances. Again, it’s natural for interests to change as kids get older, so wanting to play a different sport or give up an instrument isn’t necessarily a sign of teen depression. However, when changes in behavior are extreme, unexplained, and sudden, your teen may be struggling.

3. Changes in Appetite & Sleep Patterns

If they don't seem to sleep at all though or sleep more than average, a visit to the doctor may be in order. The same goes for changes in appetite. If your child is eating significantly more or less than usual without any apparent cause, such as a growth spurt, it could speak to a deeper emotional problem.

4. Withdrawal

Teen relationships are complex and, sometimes, it can be hard to follow all of the ups and downs of friendships. However, if your teen is withdrawing from friends and family, and prefers to spend time alone, they could be dealing with teen depression or other mental health issues. Alternatively, pay attention if they suddenly switch friend groups without being forthcoming about these new associates.
