A recent survey found that some 100 million Americans ride bicycles every year. Over half of the people surveyed said they wanted to bike more often, but fear of getting in an accident prevents them from doing so. With a little bicycle safety knowledge and some mindful riding practices, you will feel more confident on two wheels as you take to the roads, trails, and other pathways in your area.

A Guide to Bicycle Safety

1. Dress in Bright Clothing

Whether on the open road or a wooded pathway, bright clothing helps drivers, other cyclists, and hikers on the trails and roads see you more clearly. This is especially helpful when biking at dawn or dusk or during rainy or foggy weather conditions. Also, ensure your bicycle has proper lights and reflectors, and always use them in anything less than bright sun.

pathways2. Wear a Helmet

Missouri, like most states, does not have a universal bicycle helmet law, which means you are not legally obligated to wear a helmet when riding a bike. That doesn't mean you shouldn't wear one. Bike helmets reduce the risk of sustaining a serious head injury by as much as 70%. Look for a helmet that provides a secure fit without being so tight that it causes discomfort; most helmets come in small, medium, large, and extended sizes, so you have plenty of options from which to choose.

3. Ride With Traffic

When cycling on the road, ride with traffic, not against it. Maintain three to four feet between yourself any parked or moving vehicles. Also, Missouri law prohibits bicycling on sidewalks in most business districts, so plan to take the street through these areas.

4. Avoid Dangerous Terrain

As you ride, be vigilant. Avoid potholes on the road and dodge any large rocks or uneven terrain on trail pathways. Don't ride near high bluffs, deep ditches, or cliffsides.
