If you have to get a windshield replacement for your vehicle, you’ll want to take extra care of your new auto glass. Keep in mind that the new car window requires special treatment to avoid further issues, particularly immediately following the installation. Follow these do’s and don’ts after receiving a windshield replacement.

Do:

Wait an hour before driving.

Once the new windshield is installed, you should wait at least one hour before driving away from the auto glass shop. This is because the auto glass installation requires a special adhesive to remain securely in place. Driving before it has had a chance to set and dry can ruin it.

Leave the windows cracked.

For at least the first day following the windshield replacement, you should also leave the front and rear windows cracked at least an inch. Fluctuation in air pressure can put unnecessary stress on the new installation and cause issues with it setting correctly. Cracking the car windows helps to avoid this by giving the air a place to escape to prevent increased pressure.

Don’t:

Remove the retention tape too soon.

Windshield ReplacementOnce the new windshield is installed, most technicians will place a layer of tape to help hold it in place while the adhesive fully dries. While it may not be the most aesthetically pleasing accessory for your vehicle, it’s crucial to keep it on for at least the first few days before removing it so your windshield has time to set.

Put added pressure on the new windshield.

Any extra pressure placed on the windshield replacement can knock it out of place before the adhesive has properly dried. As such, you should avoid putting any added pressure either on the inside or outside of the auto glass installation for at least 48 hours. This includes vehicle covers or placards.
