What to Know Before Scuba Diving, Honolulu, Hawaii

Adventurous people who want to experience the beauty of the ocean up close should try scuba diving. As it isn’t an activity that most people do every day, you may have questions about what to expect and how to prepare. Here’s what you need to know before jumping in the water.

FAQ About Scuba Diving

Do I need my own equipment?

scuba divingIf you book with a certified tour company, you likely won’t have to bring your own scuba diving equipment as they’ll provide you with everything you need. Simply arrive with your swimsuit, and the tour company should teach you how to put on and use the gear.

Can I dive if I wear glasses?

Wearing eyeglasses doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the fun; however, the best option is to wear soft contact lenses while diving. If you aren’t comfortable with contacts, use a mask that has a prescription lens. Many dive centers have a few prescription masks that you can borrow so that you can see underwater.

What’s PADI?

PADI is the acronym used for the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. Divers who are a part of PADI are trained on scuba skills and safety measures to ensure that they provide the best education possible. PADI courses are a prerequisite to becoming scuba-certified.

How deep will I dive?

On your first adventure, expect to dive a maximum of 12 meters. After you’ve gained more experience, you can prepare to go on longer, deeper dives. Never feel that you need to dive deeper than you’re comfortable with, and communicate any apprehension with your instructor.
