In regions where no municipal water is available, residents must install and maintain water wells to access a potable supply. A well pump extracts the water, but when it breaks down, residents no longer have the supply they need for drinking, showering, and doing laundry. Because of its key applications in daily life, homeowners need to know the signs that their well pumps are malfunctioning. Below are a few indicators to watch for.

3 Signs You Need a New Water Well Pump

1. Low Pressure

Low water pressure is inconvenient. It makes showering difficult, interferes with proper washing machine functionality, and leaves you waiting to fill a mop bucket or a large saucepan. Although clogged pipes can sometimes cause low water pressure, it is often a sign of a failing well pump. Have a contractor check the pump if you notice any of the above signs.

2. Constant Operation

water well When functioning properly, the pump should only operate while water is running and for a few minutes after. For instance, after a shower or a flushed toilet, the pump should refill the pressure tank and then shut off after five minutes. If you hear it running throughout the day, it could mean it's having a problem drawing water from the well and is working overtime to keep up. Have the pump and water well inspected to identify the issue.

3. Spitting Air

The pump unit should be air and watertight so it can draw well water through one aperture and eject it through another. In some cases, a failing pump may allow air inside through gaps in the exterior. The air inside will show up as spitting or sputtering at the taps. If you notice this behavior from more than one faucet, the cause is likely the water pump.
