Carpet is an attractive and comfortable flooring option that works in a variety of spaces. When you first have carpeting installed, the fibers are clean, fresh, and bright. They need just a bit of ongoing maintenance to stay in that condition for years. To help you keep your flooring looking and feeling like new, here are a few tips for caring for it.

Do:

Vacuum regularly.

When dirt, moisture, and debris make their way onto your carpet, they can stain or break down the fibers over time. It’s impossible to prevent any foreign materials from coming into contact with your carpeting, but you can vacuum daily or at least once a week to keep it looking clean in the long-term.

Move furniture around.

When heavy pieces of furniture sit on your carpet for long periods, they crush the fibers in those particular spots. They also force you to walk on the same parts of the carpeting over and over, which may leave dirt trails. By moving around your furniture once a month, you spread out some of that weight to keep the surface even.

Don’t:

Wear shoes indoors.

carpetWhen you enter your home, your shoes probably carry in dirt, leaves, and debris that end up in your carpet fibers. To avoid this, set up doormats and benches near your entryways so you can easily remove your shoes before heading inside. Ask guests to do the same.

Let stains set.

Stains are significantly easier to remove if you get to them right away, since they haven’t had the chance to dry and set into the fibers yet. If you spill something, blot excess liquid right away with a paper towel and then use baking soda or a store-bought carpet cleaner to remove it. Don’t rub, which may spread the mark.
