Aid and attendance provided through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a benefit that provides select veterans and their spouses with allowances for home health care. There are specific eligibility requirements set forth by the VA to receive these benefits, including physical state and time of service. Here’s what you should know to find out if you or your loved one could qualify for VA aid and attendance.

3 Criteria Necessary for VA Aid & Attendance

1. Proof That Home Health Care Is Needed

A doctor must confirm that the veteran or their surviving spouse needs home health care. They must require the aid of another individual to perform functions of everyday life, such as bathing or feeding. They could also be bedridden, live in a nursing home, or have vision impairment limited to a corrected 5/200 visual acuity or less.

2. Active Duty for at Least 90 Days

3. Honorable or Other Qualifying Discharge

Veteran’s benefits are only available to individuals who have been honorably discharged or have received another qualifying discharge, as well as their surviving spouses. Service members who have met or exceeded the requirements of duty typically receive an honorable discharge, while dishonorable discharges are reserved for individuals who have committed an offense considered as reprehensible conduct.
