From cappuccinos and lattes to Frappuccinos® and americanos, there are many ways people enjoy coffee. In Hawaii, where the weather is warm year-round, enthusiasts opt for a refreshing cup of iced coffee or cold brew. Although both versions seem similar, there are several differences in how they’re made and how they taste.

Iced Coffee

coffeeBaristas finely grind coffee beans and douse it with hot water, letting it drip into a receptacle. The heat transfers the beans’ flavor into the water, and this process typically takes only a few minutes. Next, the brewed coffee is placed in a refrigerator to cool and served over ice. Many customers enjoy iced coffee with cream or a bit of chocolate or caramel syrup. For added flair, ask the barista to top the beverage with whipped cream.

Cold Brew

To craft this beverage, baristas place coarsely-ground beans into a receptacle and cover them with cold or room-temperature water. This brewing process takes longer than iced coffee since there isn’t any heat. To ensure the liquid captures the beans’ color and flavor, cold brew typically takes over 10 hours to make. This slow process produces a less acidic beverage that tastes smoother than traditional brews and offers a stronger dose of caffeine. Cold brews can be enjoyed plain or with sweeteners, like simple syrup or a hazelnut additive.
