Claw care is an often overlooked part of your dog’s health. Long claws can lead to injury and general discomfort, which is why you or a veterinarian should trim them regularly. Use the following tips at home to avoid a trip to the vet hospital.

Do:

Trim a little at a time.

Cutting too far back can be painful for your pet and lead to bleeding. Inside the claw is an area called the quick. When snipped, it becomes an open wound that can get infected. Trim just a little at a time until you reach the ideal length. If you need a demonstration, ask the staff at your local vet hospital.

Establish a routine.

Get your dog used to having their claws trimmed. Pet them during and give them treats afterward so that they associate the process with positive emotions. After the first trim, monitor your pet’s claws to see when they start chewing at them; this is a sign it’s time to do it again. If your pet spends a lot of time outdoors, their activity will naturally wear down their claws, and you won’t have to trim them as often.

Use the wrong tools.

Scissors and other tools can cause serious injury to your dog’s paws, so only use veterinarian-approved claw trimmers. These are available at most pet care stores. They fit safely over your dog’s claws and trim at the correct angle so that the flat end doesn’t scrape against the ground. Many implements also have guards to prevent cutting the quick. A professional at the vet hospital can recommend products.

Force them.

Some dogs are apprehensive at first. Never force them into getting their claws trimmed if they’re extremely opposed. Otherwise, they may jerk while you’re trimming, leading to injury. Plus, the general stress and anxiety will make the next time more difficult. First, introduce the trimmers. Let your pet sniff them and become comfortable with their presence. Next, hold your dog’s paws so that they get used to you touching them. After the first trim, reward their behavior.
