The sound of running water has been scientifically proven to calm people’s minds. Therefore, it’s no wonder that people take so much pleasure in paddling a canoe or kayak, sailing a catamaran, or driving a speedboat. However, don’t let these soothing sounds or the enchanting glimmer of sunlight on waves lull you into a false sense of complacency. Water can be dangerous too. Taking simple precautions while you’re traveling on your new boat will protect you and others.

What Precautions Should You Take as a New Boat Owner?

1. Get a Free Boat Check

If you own or plan to buy a used boat, schedule it for a free Vessel Safety Check by the United States Power Squadrons and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. This inspection will inform you if it is in need of repair or service before taking it out on the water. For those who plan on purchasing a new boat from the dealer, it’s still worthwhile to take it in for professional examination at the beginning of every boating season.

2. Take a Boating Safety Course

If you were born on or after Jan. 1, 1986, you must have the correct certification to operate a boat. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission lists boater education courses that are available in classrooms, through home study, and online.

3. Wear Life Vests

used-boatUnder Nebraska law, kids younger than the age of 13 and anyone using a personal watercraft or being towed by a boat must wear a personal flotation device approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. A kayak, canoe, or fishing boat can tip over in seconds. Wearing a life vest or jacket that fits properly can keep you or a loved one afloat until help arrives.

4. Use Common Sense

Paying attention to your surroundings while on a boat helps you stay safe. Don’t engage in horseplay or consume alcoholic beverages before or while operating a watercraft. At the first sign of bad weather approaching, head for shore or call for help.
