Taking proactive steps to protect your vision now can reduce the likelihood of developing eye problems later in life. In fact, about 80% of all vision impairment is considered avoidable. To start protecting your eyesight, follow these three easy suggestions.

How to Protect Your Vision

1. Wear Sunglasses

Sunglasses safeguard against a number of potential eye problems. Among the most common are cataracts, which are a clouding of the eye's lens; macular degeneration, which damages the retina and impairs central vision; and pterygium, a tissue growth over the eye that can lead to astigmatism. Any of these issues can cause vision trouble or, in worst-case scenarios, blindness. Look for sunglasses with at least 99% protection from UVA and UVB rays.

2. Monitor Vision Changes

It's not uncommon to experience more vision impairments as you get older, but most of these challenges can be addressed with the right eyeglasses or contact lenses. Maintain annual eye exams, and schedule additional appointments as necessary if you notice any changes in your eyesight. Always see an eye doctor right away if you experience double vision, bright flashes of light, floaters, or eye pain or swelling.

3. Stay on Top of Your General Health

There are many health issues that can lead to eye problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure, Lyme disease, measles, and certain neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis. A key part of staying on top of your vision health is to take care of your overall health. See a primary care doctor for yearly physicals, follow all exercise and dietary recommendations, and take medications, vitamins, and supplements as prescribed by your doctor.
