Getting braces is a rite of passage for many kids, but an increasing number of adults are turning to orthodontics to straighten their teeth or fix their bite. If you or your child are considering braces, here are some questions about them answered.

Considering Braces? Some Questions Answered

1. What types of braces are there?

There are three common types of braces: those with brackets bonded to the front of the teeth, brackets bonded to the back of the teeth, and metal bands that wrap around the teeth. Your orthodontist will choose the best type for you or your child.

2. How long will the braces be in place?

Most people wear braces for about two years, but the timing depends on the teeth. Ask your orthodontist for an estimate on how long the braces will be worn and what follow-up care may entail. For instance, you can ask if a retainer will be needed. Your orthodontist will provide a tentative timeline and schedule for tightening and adjustments.

3. How are the braces cared for?

It’s essential to care for the braces, but this may require some changes to dental care routines. Talk with your dentist about the best tools and procedures for brushing and flossing, and whether anything special should be done to work around the brackets and wires. Ask about foods to avoid as well; sugary treats or foods that can get caught in the braces are typically forbidden.

4. Will braces hurt?Braces

Braces usually cause discomfort when first placed and after each tightening. Talk with your orthodontist about how to best manage any discomfort. Know what is normal and to be expected, and what necessitates a call to the doctor.

5. Will braces alter a smile?

One misconception about braces is they will perfect teeth. The primary purpose is to improve the health and function of the mouth. While they’ll improve bite alignment, they won’t change the appearance of teeth. Your orthodontist can give a good idea of what teeth will look like post-treatment. Some use computer modeling for this purpose.
