If you're installing natural stone countertops, soapstone is an attractive possibility. Not only does it have a beautiful texture for countertop installations, but it’s also less porous than other stones, so it doesn't easily stain; plus, it tends not to crack as easily as marble or granite. It does need some specialized care to keep it in good shape, however. Here’s what you need to know.

A Guide to Soapstone Countertop Care

1. Oiling

Soapstone is famous for its deep charcoal color; however, when it comes out of the quarry, it’s a much lighter gray. Oiling the surface with mineral oil gives it a rich, dark luster. You'll need to apply the mineral oil several times, about one to three months apart, before it will sink in and become long-lasting. Simply spread the oil across the surface with a soft cloth, rubbing it in with circular motions; then, use another cloth or a paper towel to wipe away any excess oil. Some companies also offer wax products— labeled as soapstone sealers—to serve the same purpose. You can make your own by combining beeswax and linseed oil.

2. Cleaning

Because natural stone countertops, including soapstone, aren't porous, they're safe to prepare food on and easy to clean. Use mild soap and water, along with a soft rag. Harsher cleaners can be used, as soapstone isn't vulnerable to etching; but these products can strip away the mineral oil.

3. Scratches

Small scratches can often be fixed by reapplying mineral oil to the area. If the scratch is still visible, sand it out. Clean the area and let it dry, then sand it with a round of 100- or 120-grit sandpaper using circular motions. Follow this with a round of 220-grit or higher for a smooth finish. Sanding may leave a small area of the countertop surface looking different from its surroundings, but applying mineral oil to darken it will fix this issue.
