Plumbers highly recommend garbage disposals because they provide a useful way for homeowners to get rid of most scrap foods. When properly maintained, they also protect your pipes from clogs and unexpected repairs. To ensure your system is cared for, be sure to follow the do's and don'ts below.

Do:

Turn the cold water on while operating the disposal.

Always turn on the faucet before you flip on the garbage disposal. The cold water will help the blades grind up the food and ensure the debris makes its way to the sewer line. Cold water will prevent grease and fat from solidifying and sticking to the blades and pipes, which can clog the system.

Clean it at least once a week.

The inside of your garbage disposal will begin to smell if it is not cleaned regularly. Add a few drops of soap to the system and let cold water run for a while to clear it out. For a fresh smell, squirt a few drops of lemon juice and thin peels. The citrus will remove any built-up particles inside the disposal and the rind will create a pleasant aroma in your kitchen. If this doesn't relieve the odor, call a plumber to inspect your system.

Don't:

Add hard or fibrous foods to the disposal.

plumberThe blades on the appliance effectively grind up foods that will easily breakdown. However, it will not break down fruit pits and seeds, popcorn kernels, bones, and other hard items. These bits can damage the blades or get stuck in between them. Additionally, avoid fibrous fruits and vegetables—such as celery, banana peels, and pumpkin—as the thin strings can wrap around the blades and dull them.

Add anything that isn't food.

A garbage disposal is not a trash can and should only be used for grinding up food waste. Avoid placing any items that could damage the motor or blades, such as those made out of glass, plastic, paper, or metal. Plumbers also advise against pouring cooking oil, grease, and fats into the system, as they will not be flushed out and will eventually cause a clog.
